If you are cutting a sign that is made up of primarily small text, say 3/16" to 3/8", in a font style such as Ms Sans Serif, it might be better to turn the smoothing function of the cutter off!
Just remember to turn it back on when you cut larger text.
Most user guides give some discussion about 'smoothing' if you are interested.
Note: Use only fonts that are approved by your sign cutting application software company. Many fonts are made for 'printing' and not for cutting so they may not pay attention to the detail required to cut accurately. These fonts will have a start and end point on one side or another of the letter. These two points will not meet and cause poor weeding.
Difficulty cutting small lettering (how small needs to be defined) is usually due to cutter setup.
- Offset alignment (leaves incomplete cuts)
- epos (alignment between printed area and cut areas)
- knife depth (should be set for media thickness not to cut backing, offset alignment optimized for media thickness)
- pressure (again could leave incomplete cuts or effectively override offset and/or knife depth with too little pressure)
- acceleratation (high acceleration and low pressure could cause some ‘lifting’ of the knife at corners.
