In this case when you send a file, the Plotter immediately displays an error message and beeps, but never begins to plot. If you get NO response (error on plotter LCD display or beeps) then you should read the other FAQ first. Click your 'Back' arrow and consult 'NO response from Mutoh plotter".

Possible causes that make an error message on the plotter after sending a plot job to the plotter:

  • The communications parameters (meaning that the baud rate, number of data bits, parity, stop bits and handshaking) of the computer's serial port do not match those of the Plotter. If you are in Windows, make sure that the Windows port settings (in the Windows Control Panel) match the way the communications parameters have been set on the Plotter's display (see Plotter manual for details). Note: communications parameters are not applicable if the Plotter is plugged into a parallel (printer) port.

  • The language of the file being sent to the Plotter does not match the language to which the Plotter is set.  For example if the file is in HP-GL   then the Plotter must be set to MH-GL HP-758x (Mutoh's emulation of HP-GL HP-7585), so the Plotter can understand the file. Likewise if the file is in HP-GL/2  then the Plotter must be set to MH-GL/2 (Mutoh's emulation of HP-GL/2). Note that the various Plotters made by Mutoh differ in terms of what languages they can be set to, so check your user manual.

  • Be aware that the file language depends on the Plotter driver software being used. Mutoh's Windows driver can produce MH-GL or MH-GL/2 files, depending on which Plotter model it has been set up for. See the Readme or Manual files that come with the driver for proper selection.

  • If after confirming both the communication parameters and the language (driver language versus plotter emulation) you still get an error message on the plotter then it is our experience that there must be some sort of IRQ conflict within the computer which is sending extra information that the plotter doesn't know what to do with. You must now confirm that the port you are using is a dedicated com port where the IRQ of that port is not being shared with any other devices.  Consult your computer manufacturer or technician for assistance with this problem.

  • Some notorious devices might be:

    1) An internal or external FAX/Modem using the IRQ of the port you are trying to use with the plotter. Reconfigure the FAX/Modem to use another IRQ that is not in conflict with the port of the plotter. (This may mean changing jumpers on the FAX/Modem card inside your computer so consult your computer manufacturer or technician for assistance.

    2) An internal Network card. Many Network cards come preconfigured for the IRQ of com 2. Reconfigure the Network card to avoid the IRQ of the port that the plotter is using.  Consult your computer manufacturer or technician for assistance.

    3) Any mouse, digitizer, tape drive or other serial type devices. Change their setup to avoid the IRQ of the port where the plotter is located.   Consult your computer manufacturer or technician for assistance.

  • Some customers have reported beeping or LCD errors but the plotter keeps right on plotting with no problem. If this is the case and you have exhausted all options mentioned above then we really have to other thoughts other than to keep looking for some hardware device.  Clear the error if needed and keep plotting.   It may be impossible to eliminate the error.
