Step Adjust Using The Purple Patch
In addition to the on-board step adjust procedure outlined in the Toucan Operators Manual, Mutoh has developed an easier method that can be used to quickly calibrate step adjust. The method is outlined below:
- Be sure to set media thickness for the media you are using
- Create a purple test block as wide as your media and about 6-inches long in your RIP application; send the file at 360x360 uni-directional 1-pass
- Watch the image as it prints, a good quality image will have no light or dark bands. Chromatic banding (due to ink firing order when creating colors) may be present to some degree - this is normal
- Dark Bands - the step is too small and each subsequent pass slightly overlaps the previous pass; increase step approximately .2% for each millimeter of band thickness
- Continue to fine tune until there are only hints of chromatic banding
Once the step for a media has been adjusted, set the heat and dryer and save the settings as whatever user is being used. Use different users for subsequent media types and keep a cheat sheet of user selections if necessary
This procedure should make dialing in step adjust a 10-15 minute process and require about 3-5 feet of media.
